What Course Should I Take?

To receive training or continuing education (CE) credit, Railroad Commission rules require applicants for certification and certified individuals to take courses related to their job duties (§9.52).  Below are the approved courses for each type of LP-gas certification.

A continuing education course is required to maintain an existing certification:

Bobtail Driver

This course focuses on applicable rule changes related to LP-gas bobtail driver activities and a review of administrative requirements and other topic-related requirements that are often cited for non-compliance.

Appliance Service & Installation

This course focuses on a review of the rule requirements related to the service and installation of LP-gas systems as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Service and Installation

This course focuses on a review of the rule requirements related to the service and installation of LP-gas systems as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

 

DOT Cylinder Filler

This course focuses on a review of the rule requirements related to LP-gas dispensing operations as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Motor/Mobile Fuel Filler

This course focuses on a review of the rule requirements related to LP-gas dispensing operations as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Dispenser Operations Exemption

This course focuses on a review of the rule requirements related to LP-gas dispensing operations as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Recreational Vehicle Technician

This course focuses on a review of the rule requirements related to activities for LP-gas recreational vehicle technicians as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Category D Manager

 


This course focuses on a review of general rule requirements as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Category E Manager

This course focuses on a review of general rule requirements as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Category F, G, I or J Manager

This course focuses on a review of general rule requirements as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Category K Manager

This course focuses on a review of general rule requirements as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

Category M Manager

This course focuses on a review of general rule requirements as well as administrative requirements and applicable rule changes.

 

A training course (initial course of instruction) is required for a new certification:

Bobtail Driver

This 8-hour course covers federal and state regulations that apply to hazardous material transportation, the operation of propane delivery vehicles, and LP-gas safety rules, including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 54, National Fuel Gas Code and NFPA 58, LP-Gas Code, that apply to LP-gas installations. 

Service and Installation

This 8-hour course covers the procedures for proper installation and start-up of a residential propane system, including correct appliance operation.

Appliance Service & Installation

This 8-hour course covers the requirements for proper installation and start-up of a residential propane system, including correct appliance operation.

This course covers the requirements for converting, installing, and venting of propane gas appliances.

DOT Cylinder Filler

This 8-hour course covers proper filling and handling of ASME motor/mobile fuel containers, appurtenances, DOT cylinders, and dispenser operations.

Motor/Mobile Fuel Filler

This 8-hour course covers proper filling and handling of ASME motor/mobile fuel containers, appurtenances, DOT cylinders, and dispenser operations.

Recreational Vehicle Technician

This course covers servicing of recreational vehicles' LP-gas systems and appliances.

Category D Manager

This 8-hour course covers the procedures for proper installation and start-up of a residential propane system, including correct appliance operation.

Category E Manager

This 80-hour course covers all the material in courses 2.1, 2.3, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.8; Railroad Commission LP-Gas Safety Rules; (NFPA) 54, and 58.

Category F, G, I or J Manager

This 16-hour course covers ASME motor/mobile fuel containers, appurtenances, DOT cylinders, the operations of a dispenser to fill tanks and cylinders and applicable LP-gas requirements for obtaining a Category F, G, I or J management-level certificate. Students observe the operation of a dispenser to fill cylinders and containers.

Category K Manager

This 8-hour course covers the procedures for proper installation and start-up of a residential propane system, including correct appliance operation.

Category M Manager

This course covers servicing of recreational vehicles' LP-gas systems and appliances.
